Lesson sheet · Module 29

Sustainable finance and "green" claims

The aim of the lesson

"Sustainable" is a claim, not proof. Ask: what exactly, for whom, how is it proven, who checks it and what does it cost — and do not buy a promise of profit dressed in green.

  • 👧 Child: a beautiful word is the start of a question, not an answer.
  • 🧑 Teenager: five questions; a generic claim is not enough.
  • 🧔 Adult:
  • tell apart a characteristic (Article 8), an objective (Article 9) and a marketing name;
  • look at the binding elements, the share and the costs;
  • do not confuse "sustainable" with "safe" or "profitable".

Your step in Pecuvo: in your portfolio, open a "Sustainability" basket (optional) and write down your own preferences in one sentence, and against each product or large purchase — the five questions and the answers with their date. Note separately if any answer is "no document".

The topic (chapters of the module)

  1. Chapter 1 · What "sustainable" means in money: environment, society, governance (ESG)
  2. Chapter 2 · The household: energy, home, transport and public programmes
  3. Chapter 3 · The EU Taxonomy: a rulebook for economic activities
  4. Chapter 4 · SFDR: what financial products disclose (Articles 6, 8, 9) and how to read it
  5. Chapter 5 · Fund names: the ESMA guidelines
  6. Chapter 6 · "Green" claims: Directive (EU) 2024/825
  7. Chapter 7 · European green bonds
  8. Chapter 8 · Five questions for every claim
  9. Chapter 9 · Sustainability, risk and return — no promises

For the youngest · ages 6–7

🐣 The youngest: When you switch off the light, you look after both nature and money. When you fix a toy, it lives longer. If something says "good for nature", you can ask: "Why?" A good answer is clear and shows you something.

Play together (5 minutes): Be "light keepers": walk around the home and look for lights left on in empty rooms and for dripping taps. For each one found, the child gets a drawn star.

A question for the evening: "What can we fix instead of buying new?"

Questions for the class — 3 per level

  • 👧 1. What are the three letters in ESG and what do they mean? 2. Why is it good to ask "how do we know?" when something is "good for nature"? 3. What are the five questions for a claim?
  • 🧑 1. What is a generic environmental claim and why is it not enough? 2. What is the EU Taxonomy — and why is it not a rating of a company? 3. Since when has Directive (EU) 2024/825 applied?
  • 🧔 1. What is the difference between Articles 6, 8 and 9 of SFDR, and why is the number not a grade? 2. What threshold and what dates do the ESMA guidelines on fund names contain? 3. Why does "sustainable" mean neither safer nor more profitable — and where is the link with Module 24 and Module 17?
