The bank and financial products — accounts, deposits, deposit guarantee

The aim of the lesson

Know who holds your money and how far it is protected; pay only for services you use; read the price before you sign.

  • 👧 Child: keep your money in a safe place and ask a grown-up before you sign.
  • 🧑 Teenager: a bank is only a licensed institution; in the EU the guarantee is up to €100,000 per person per bank.
  • 🧔 Adult:
  • all accounts in one bank are added together;
  • investment products are not deposits;
  • the fee information document — before you sign;
  • if there is a problem: first the bank, then the out-of-court body, and keep the documents.

Your step in Pecuvo: in your wallet, open a basket "Banks and accounts". For each account, note: bank, type, yearly cost (fees + card), interest rate, whether it is guaranteed, and the total in that bank (so you can see whether it stays under €100,000). Set a goal with a date — "I read the statement of fees", "I compare my accounts".

  2. Chapter 2 · Types of accounts and what they cost
  3. Chapter 3 · The basic payment account — everyone's right
  4. Chapter 4 · Deposits: how interest is calculated
  5. Chapter 5 · Deposit guarantee: how far the protection goes
  6. Chapter 6 · How to read the fee documents
  7. Chapter 7 · Switching accounts and comparing
  8. Chapter 8 · Complaints and checking the licence

For the youngest · ages 6–7

🐣 The youngest: A bank is like a big safe with lots of drawers. Everyone has their own drawer for their money. The bank writes down in a notebook how much each person has. It keeps the money safe and sends it wherever you say.

Play together (5 minutes): Make a "bank" from a shoebox with a few compartments, one for each person in the family. The child is the banker: they take in buttons, write them down in a notebook and give them back when you ask. At the end, compare the notebook with the box.

A question for the evening: "If you had your own bank, how would you look after people's money?"

A game from the catalogue: LV-09 "The bank keeps and adds a little" — https://pecuvo.eu/igri/katalog/#lv-09 (in Bulgarian)
