How it is calculated
Leva → euro: amount ÷ 1.95583; euro → leva: amount × 1.95583; the result is rounded to the cent.
The EU rule. When a country joins the euro area, the conversion rate of its currency is fixed irrevocably by the Council of the EU, and amounts are converted by that one rate and rounded to the cent.
Example: Bulgaria. The lev was pegged by a currency board from 1997 — first to the Deutschmark, from 1999 to the euro at 1.95583 — and the same rate became the conversion rate when Bulgaria adopted the euro on 1.01.2026 (ECB, press release of 8.07.2025).
Check in your country: if your country is preparing to join the euro, its central bank publishes the changeover plan and the rules for dual price display.
